March to June and October to mid-November are the best months to fly. Here is the month-by-month breakdown and the best time of day.
The best time for paragliding in Bir Billing is spring (March to June) and autumn (October to mid-November), when skies are clear and thermals are reliable. Flying is suspended during the monsoon (mid-July to mid-September). On any flyable day, mornings are the smoothest and midday gives the strongest thermals for longer flights.
Bir Billing has two clear flying seasons and one closed one. Picking the right window makes the difference between a smooth, scenic flight and a wasted trip up the mountain. This guide walks through the year month by month, then covers the best time of day and how many days to plan.
| Month | Flying | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| March | Peak | Season opens, clear skies and building thermals |
| April | Peak | The best all-round month: strong thermals, great views |
| May | Peak | Warm with strong thermals, afternoons can get hazy |
| June | Flyable | Good early June, then humidity builds before the monsoon |
| July | Closed | Monsoon: flying suspended for safety |
| August | Closed | Monsoon: flying suspended for safety |
| September | Closed / reopening | Suspended, usually reopening around mid-September |
| October | Peak | Crisp, clear and stable: arguably the best visibility of the year |
| November | Peak | Clear and stable to mid-month, then the cold sets in |
| December | Limited | Cold, shorter windows, but clear days still fly |
| January | Limited | Coldest month, very weather-dependent |
| February | Limited | Warming up, the season starts to build again |
Spring is the classic Bir Billing season. March eases in with clear skies, April is the sweet spot for strong, reliable thermals and long flights, and May stays excellent though afternoons can turn hazy. By late June the air is humid and the monsoon is close, so aim for the first half of the month.
Paragliding is suspended through the monsoon. Cloud, rain and unstable air make flying unsafe, and operators do not launch. If your trip falls in this window, plan Bir for its cafes, monasteries and waterfalls instead, and save the flight for a different season.
Once the monsoon clears, the air is washed clean and visibility is at its best all year. October and early November give crisp, stable conditions and some of the most photogenic flights, with the Dhauladhar range sharp on the horizon. This is the season many pilots rate above spring.
Winter flying happens on clear days, but windows are shorter and it is genuinely cold at 2,400 m. If you come in winter, book flexible dates, fly on the clearest morning, and layer up with gloves. It can be beautifully quiet, just less predictable.
If you want the calmest ride, fly early. If you want maximum air-time, fly the midday thermals. Tell your pilot which you prefer when you book.
A flight itself is a half-day with the drive up and briefing, but weather can move. Plan a two to three day buffer in peak season so you can fly on the best morning rather than forcing a marginal day. See the full logistics in the Plan your trip guide.
Every flight is weather-gated: it only launches when wind and visibility are safe, and grounded days are rescheduled free. That is why flexible dates matter more than a specific date. For prices across the seasons, see the Bir Billing paragliding price guide.

April and October are the standout months. April brings strong spring thermals and long flights, while October offers the clearest visibility of the year after the monsoon.
No. Flying is suspended from roughly mid-July to mid-September because monsoon cloud, rain and unstable air make it unsafe. Operations resume around mid-September.
Winter (December to February) is flyable on clear days but cold, with shorter windows. Book flexible dates, fly on the clearest morning, and dress in warm layers.
Mornings are the smoothest and calmest, ideal for a gentle first flight. Midday thermals are strongest and best for longer high-fly or cross-country flights.
