Plan Your Bir Billing Paragliding Trip

Getting to Bir, when to fly, what to pack, and how long to stay. Everything you need before you launch.

Getting to Bir

Bir is in the Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Nearest airport: Kangra (Gaggal), ~2 hrs. Nearest broad-gauge railhead: Pathankot (~3.5 hrs); the Kangra toy-train stops at Ahju/Bir. Overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi (~12 hrs) to Baijnath/Bir. We drive you the last 14 km up to the Billing launch.

When to come

Peak flying is March–June and October to mid-November, with clear skies and reliable thermals. Monsoon (July–September) is grounded. Mornings are calm and smooth; midday gives the biggest thermals for longer flights.

  • Spring: Mar–Jun
  • Autumn: Oct–mid Nov
  • Avoid: Jul–Sep (monsoon)

What to wear & bring

It's colder at 2,400 m than in the valley, so layer up.

  • Closed sports shoes (essential for take-off)
  • A light jacket or windcheater
  • Sunglasses (with a strap) & sunscreen
  • Full-fingered gloves in spring/autumn
  • A valid ID; secure or leave behind loose items

Where to stay

Bir town and Chowgan (near the landing) have everything from hostels and homestays to boutique stays and cafés. Book ahead on weekends and in peak season. We're near Surya Hotel, easy to find before your flight.

How long to plan

A day flight needs half a day with the drive up, gear-up and weather buffer. The camping and Rajgundha-trek packages run 2–3 days. Many visitors stay a little longer to fly on the best-weather morning and explore the monasteries, waterfalls and cafés.

Good to know

Flights are weather-dependent, so keep your schedule flexible. Eat light before flying. Tell us any medical conditions when booking. Grounded days are rebooked free, so there's no pressure to fly in marginal conditions.
